You know the message exists. The supplier quoted a price in March, or a client sent the site address in a group with 200 other messages that week. You type "price" into WhatsApp search and get forty results from six chats, none of them the one you need, because the supplier actually wrote "rate".

To search old WhatsApp messages, use the search bar on the Chats tab for a keyword across every chat, open a chat and use its search to look inside one conversation or jump to a date, and use the Photos, Links and Documents filters to find shared files. When you remember what was said but not the exact words, an AI that can read your WhatsApp, like Perisclaw, can search all your chats by meaning and show you the message, the date and the chat it came from.

Search by keyword across all chats

This works the same on iPhone, Android and WhatsApp Web or Desktop.

  1. Open the Chats tab and tap (or click) the search bar at the top.

  2. Type the word or phrase you remember.

  3. Tap a result to open that message in its chat, with the conversation around it.

Search matches the words you type, so pick the most unusual word you remember: an invoice number, a street name, a product, a surname. "Invoice" will find hundreds of messages; "INV-2041" finds one.

Search inside one chat or group

When you know who said it, search that chat only. It cuts out everyone else's noise.

  • iPhone: open the chat, tap the chat name at the top, then tap Search and type your word. On iPad, open the chat, tap the More menu, then Search.

  • Android: open the chat, tap the three-dot menu, then Search and type your word.

  • WhatsApp Web and Desktop: open the chat and click the search icon at the top of the chat.

To search by contact when you're not sure which chat it was in, type the person's name in the Chats tab search. Below their chat, WhatsApp lists Groups in common, the groups you're both in, so you can check those too.

Search WhatsApp messages by date

Date search lets you jump straight to a day in a chat, which is the fastest way to find "something from the week of the launch". It works inside an individual or group chat, not across all chats.

  1. Open the chat and start a search as above.

  2. Tap the calendar icon next to the search field.

  3. Pick the date. On iPhone tap Jump to date; on Android tap OK. On Web, pick the date and the chat jumps there.

You land on that day and can scroll up or down from there.

Find photos, documents, links and voice notes

From the Chats tab search, WhatsApp shows filters for the kind of message you want.

  • Filters on the Chats tab: Photos, Videos, Links, GIFs, Audio, Documents and Polls on iPhone and Android, and Android also has Unread and Stickers. Tap one to see every item of that type across your chats.

  • Combine a filter with a word: type a word, then pick a filter, for example "lease" plus Documents to find the signed PDF.

These filters only work from the Chats tab, not from the search inside a single chat.

Use starred messages so you never search twice

Starring is WhatsApp's bookmark. Press and hold a message and tap Star (on Android, the star icon at the top). To see everything you've starred, go to Settings → Starred on iPhone, or the three-dot menu above your chat list → Starred on Android. On iPhone you can also tap a chat's name and choose Starred to see only that chat's starred messages.

Why WhatsApp search can't find a message

If you've tried all of the above and still can't find it, it's usually one of these.

  • You remember the meaning, not the words: search looks for the words you type. If they wrote "rate" and you search "price", or they said it in a voice note, keyword search won't find it.

  • It's on your phone but not your computer: WhatsApp Web and Desktop only get a copy of your recent history when you link them, and WhatsApp says not every message is synced. Desktop syncs more than Web. To search your full history, use your phone.

  • The message was deleted or disappeared: a message deleted for you or for everyone is removed from every device, and disappearing messages vanish after 24 hours, 7 days or 90 days, depending on the chat's setting. Search can't bring them back.

  • You just restored a backup: after a restore, WhatsApp needs time to rebuild its search index, so older messages may not show up for a while. Keep the app open until it finishes.

  • The chat is archived: if you can't find a chat or group, check the Archived section of the Chats tab.

Search all your WhatsApp chats by meaning with AI

Real questions are rarely one keyword: "what did we agree with Mehta Builders on the payment schedule?" or "which client asked for the revised quote?" need something that reads the conversations, not just matches words.

Perisclaw is Your Executive Assistant on WhatsApp. It connects to the number you already use as a linked device, and you ask it in your self-chat (the chat with your own name) in plain words. It searches across your chats, can look inside voice notes, images and documents when you point it at one, and shows you where each answer came from, with the date and the chat, so you can check it before you act.

Some searches to try:

  • A deal or client: "Find everything about the Mehta Builders deal across all my chats and list the decisions with dates."

  • A half-remembered message: "Find the message where we agreed the launch date. Tell me who agreed and show me the source."

  • A file: "Find the signed lease PDF the landlord sent, not the draft."

Perisclaw returning matching WhatsApp messages with dates and the chats they came from

If you connect Gmail, Outlook, your calendar or Drive, the same question can search those too, so "what did the bank say about the loan?" finds the answer whether it came by email or WhatsApp. Any chat you block in Perisclaw's settings, or lock with WhatsApp's Chat Lock, is left out of search entirely. More detail is in the Search across everything guide.

Perisclaw has the same history limit as WhatsApp Web: it gets the recent history WhatsApp copies to a newly linked device, plus every message from then on. For something years old that never synced, your phone's own search is still the place to look.

Search old WhatsApp conversations from Claude or ChatGPT

If you already work in Claude or ChatGPT, you can ask them to search your WhatsApp too. Add Perisclaw to Claude as a custom connector (Customize → Connectors → Add custom connector, then paste https://api.perisclaw.com/mcp/plugin), or install the Perisclaw plugin in ChatGPT, then sign in and choose Read only so your AI can search and read but never send. Then ask Claude "search my WhatsApp for what the supplier said about delivery dates in September" and it quotes the matching messages in your conversation. Our guide to connecting WhatsApp to Claude has every step, including Claude Code.

Perisclaw connects as a linked device, which WhatsApp didn't build for outside tools, and WhatsApp's help centre warns that linking unofficial apps can lead to a ban. Perisclaw is built for normal personal use like reading and searching your own chats, and it has built-in caps: if you ask it to send the same message to many chats it stops after 15, and it adds people to groups 10 at a time. Nobody outside WhatsApp can promise zero risk, so we don't.

FAQ

How do I search WhatsApp messages by date?

Open the chat, start a search, tap the calendar icon, pick the date, and tap Jump to date (iPhone) or OK (Android). Date search works inside one chat or group, not across all chats at once.

How can I search all my WhatsApp messages for a specific deal or client?

Type the client's name or the most unusual word you remember into the Chats tab search, then check their chat and the Groups in common list. If the deal is spread over several groups or you don't remember the words, ask Perisclaw "find everything about the <client> deal across all my chats" and it returns the relevant messages with dates and the chats they came from.

Can I search WhatsApp voice notes?

WhatsApp's search finds voice notes with the Audio filter, but it can't search what was said in them. Perisclaw can transcribe a voice note you point it at, so you can ask what it said or pull out a number or a date.

Can I use Claude to search my old WhatsApp conversations?

Yes. Connect Perisclaw to Claude as a custom connector with read-only access, then ask in plain words; Claude searches the WhatsApp history Perisclaw can see and quotes the messages back.

Can I find a deleted WhatsApp message?

Not through search. When a message is deleted, for you or for everyone, the deletion syncs to every device where you're logged in, so neither WhatsApp search nor an AI that reads your chats can find it.
