It's the 5th, Rahul's invoice was due on the 1st, and you meant to send him a polite nudge three days ago. You didn't, because nothing reminded you, and now you're writing a slightly awkward message at 10pm. Multiply that by six clients and a landlord, and payment reminders end up taking more of your head than the money is worth.

You can schedule WhatsApp messages in four ways today: WhatsApp's own scheduler (in beta since October 2026, one-off messages up to two weeks ahead), a third-party scheduler app, the WhatsApp Business API for reminders to many customers, or an AI assistant like Perisclaw that sends from your own number and follows up until the client replies. For a birthday message, WhatsApp's scheduler is enough. For payment reminders that repeat monthly and stop when the money arrives, you need something that reads the reply.

Can you schedule messages on WhatsApp itself?

Not for everyone yet. As of November 2026, WhatsApp is testing a native scheduler with beta users on Android and iPhone: hold the send button, pick a date and time, and the message goes out even if your phone is closed. You can schedule from 10 minutes to two weeks ahead, and scheduled messages sit in the chat's info screen. There's no public release date yet. Once you have it, it's the simplest free option for one-off messages, though it doesn't repeat and doesn't know whether anyone replied.

The WhatsApp Business app doesn't have per-message scheduling either. What it does have are automatic replies: a greeting message for new customers, and an away message that can follow your business hours or a custom schedule. Both answer people who message you first, so neither will send Rahul a reminder on the 5th.

Third-party schedulers and their risks

Scheduler apps work by driving WhatsApp for you, on your phone or through WhatsApp Web:

  • SKEDit (Android): it needs Accessibility access to tap through WhatsApp. With "Ask me before sending" on, you confirm each send yourself. With it off, it sends alone, but your phone must be on at send time, and some phones block it while locked, so people end up turning off their screen lock.

  • Blueticks (Chrome extension): adds scheduling to WhatsApp Web. The free plan holds three scheduled messages and sends only while WhatsApp Web is open; the paid Pro plan sends with your computer off.

These are fine for a few personal messages. Beyond that, be careful: an app with Accessibility access can see everything on your screen, a phone without a screen lock is a security cost, and WhatsApp's help centre warns that linking unofficial apps can get an account banned. That warning applies to every linked-device tool, Perisclaw included, and matters most when you send the same message to lots of people.

When you need the WhatsApp Business API

If you send reminders to hundreds of customers (EMIs, school fees, renewals), use the WhatsApp Business API through a provider. You send pre-approved templates to customers who opted in, usually from a dedicated number, and Meta charges per delivered template; utility templates like payment reminders are free if the customer messaged you in the last 24 hours. It takes setup, but it's built for volume.

How to schedule WhatsApp messages with Perisclaw

Perisclaw runs on your own WhatsApp number as a linked device, the way WhatsApp Web does, on regular WhatsApp or the Business app. You ask in your self-chat (the chat with your own number):

  1. Say what to send, to whom, and when. "Send 'Happy birthday!' to Maa tomorrow at midnight." Mention the timezone if the person is somewhere else.

  2. Check what it repeats back. Perisclaw confirms the recipient, the wording, the first send and whether it repeats. If a date or time is unclear, it asks instead of guessing.

  3. Leave it, or change it later. Ask "what do I have coming up?", or open Work in the web app, where messages going out in the next 24 hours show under Up next. Pause, edit or delete any of them.

Scheduled messages go out as you, with no assistant label. Reminders to yourself work the same way ("remind me Tuesday at 10am to send the invoice") and come back with the reason attached.

Payment reminders that stop when the client pays

A scheduled message is one timed send. Payment reminders need more: wait, check whether the person replied, try again, then tell you. Perisclaw runs that as an automation (it repeats) or a mission (a goal it sees through); describe what you want and it picks.

A one-off reminder:

"Send Rahul a payment reminder on the 5th at 11am for invoice 1042, ₹45,000, due on the 1st."

A monthly reminder with follow-ups:

"On the 3rd of every month, remind Rahul about his retainer invoice. If he hasn't replied in three days, ask again more firmly. If there's still nothing after that, tell me instead of sending a third message."

Before it goes live, Perisclaw shows you who it will message, how long it waits and when it stops. Follow-ups stop when the person replies, and a chase can't run forever unless you ask.

Several overdue invoices at once:

"Chase the three unpaid invoices from last month until they're paid. Check with me before the second reminder."

Perisclaw can't see your bank account, so it learns a payment arrived from the chat (the client says "paid" or sends a screenshot) or from you ("Rahul paid"). If you track invoices in a Google Sheet, connect it and ask Perisclaw to check the Sheet before each reminder. It never agrees to a discount or payment plan without checking with you.

One limit by design: if you send the same message to many people in one go, Perisclaw stops after 15 chats, tells you who got it and asks before continuing, because bulk sending is what gets personal numbers flagged. For hundreds of customers on the same day, use the Business API.

How to write a payment reminder people actually respond to

Most late payers simply forgot, so friendly and specific works better than stern. A few rules:

  • Remind before the due date: a heads-up two or three days early doesn't feel like a chase.

  • Put everything in one message: amount, invoice number, due date and how to pay, so they can pay without replying to ask.

  • Message them privately: never chase a payment in a group chat, even a work group.

  • Send in working hours: 11am on a weekday reads as business; 11pm doesn't.

  • Escalate slowly: friendly, then direct, then a phone call after two unanswered messages.

  • Say thank you when it lands: it makes next month's reminder easier.

Templates you can copy (replace the brackets):

Three days before:

"Hi [Name], a quick heads-up that invoice [number] for [amount] is due on [date]. You can pay here: [payment link or bank details]. Thanks!"

A few days late:

"Hi [Name], just checking on invoice [number] for [amount], which was due on [date]. Could you let me know when you expect to pay? Happy to resend it if it got lost."

Two weeks late:

"Hi [Name], invoice [number] for [amount] is now two weeks overdue. Please could you settle it by [date], or tell me if there's a problem I should know about? I'd like to sort it out before the next billing cycle."

After payment:

"Received, thank you [Name]! Appreciate it."

Paste any of these into a Perisclaw request ("use this wording for the first reminder") and it fills in each client's details.

FAQ

Can I schedule WhatsApp messages with an AI assistant?

Yes. Perisclaw schedules messages from your own number when you ask in plain words, like "send this to the Sharma group on Friday at 9am". It confirms the details first, can repeat the message, and can follow up if nobody replies.

Can I schedule a WhatsApp message without a third-party app?

Soon. WhatsApp is testing a built-in scheduler with beta users as of November 2026, for one-off messages up to two weeks ahead. Until you have it, you need an app, an extension or an assistant.

How do I send payment reminders to clients on WhatsApp automatically?

For a handful of clients, describe it once to an assistant like Perisclaw: who, how much, when, and what to do if they don't reply. For hundreds of customers, use the Business API with an approved utility template.

Can I set up recurring reminders, like rent on the 1st of every month?

Yes. Ask for a monthly reminder (a nudge) or a monthly task (stays open until done). You can ask in Spanish ("recordatorios automáticos por WhatsApp"), Portuguese, Hindi or most other widely used languages.

Does it work with the WhatsApp Business app?

Yes, on the number you already use, without the Business API. Your greeting and away messages keep working alongside it.
