Can Microsoft Copilot connect to WhatsApp? Which Copilots can, and how (2026)

Your week runs on Outlook and Teams, but your customers, contractors and family all message you on WhatsApp. You ask Copilot "what did the contractor promise on WhatsApp?" and it can only look in your email. And the Copilot number you used to text on WhatsApp stopped answering in January.
The Copilot app (copilot.microsoft.com and the Copilot mobile and desktop apps) can't connect to WhatsApp: as of November 2026 its connectors only cover OneDrive, Outlook.com, Google Drive and Gmail, with no way to add your own. Two other Copilots can. GitHub Copilot in VS Code, JetBrains and Visual Studio, and agents you build in Copilot Studio, can connect WhatsApp to Microsoft Copilot through Perisclaw's MCP server: you add one URL, sign in, and choose read only or read and write.
Which Copilot can connect to WhatsApp?
Microsoft uses the Copilot name for several different products, and they handle outside tools very differently.
Copilot | Can it connect to WhatsApp? | How |
|---|---|---|
Copilot app (copilot.microsoft.com, Windows, mobile) | No | Connectors are fixed to Microsoft and Google services |
Copilot on WhatsApp (the chatbot number) | Ended January 15, 2026 | It was a chatbot you messaged; it never saw your chats |
GitHub Copilot in VS Code | Yes | Add an MCP server and sign in |
GitHub Copilot in JetBrains IDEs | Yes (sign-in support is in preview) | Add an MCP server in mcp.json |
GitHub Copilot in Visual Studio | Yes | Add an MCP server and sign in |
Copilot Studio agents | Yes | Add an MCP tool with OAuth dynamic discovery |
Microsoft 365 Copilot (admin connector) | Not with Perisclaw yet | Needs a pre-registered client ID and secret |
GitHub Copilot cloud agent | No | Doesn't support MCP servers that sign in with OAuth |
Connect WhatsApp to GitHub Copilot in VS Code
This works on every Copilot plan, including Copilot Free. On Copilot Business or Enterprise, your organization has to turn on the "MCP servers in Copilot" policy first.
Open the Command Palette and run MCP: Add Server.
Choose HTTP (HTTP or Server-Sent Events) and paste
https://api.perisclaw.com/mcp/plugin.Enter
perisclawas the server ID and choose where to save it (Global for all your projects).Accept the trust and sign-in prompts. Your browser opens the Perisclaw sign-in; approve it and choose Read only or Read & write.

If you'd rather edit a file, add this to .vscode/mcp.json in your project:
{ "servers": { "perisclaw": { "type": "http", "url": "https://api.perisclaw.com/mcp/plugin" } } }
New to Perisclaw? The first sign-in lets you create an account and link WhatsApp by scanning a QR code or entering a pairing code on your phone. Then open Copilot Chat and ask "What needs my reply on WhatsApp today?"
Connect WhatsApp to GitHub Copilot in JetBrains and Visual Studio
JetBrains (IntelliJ IDEA, PyCharm and others): update the GitHub Copilot plugin, open Copilot Chat in Agent mode, click the tools icon and choose Add MCP Tools. That opens mcp.json; add { "servers": { "perisclaw": { "url": "https://api.perisclaw.com/mcp/plugin" } } }, save, then click Auth above the entry to sign in. GitHub lists this sign-in support as a preview.
Visual Studio 2022 (17.14 or later) and 2026: in Copilot Chat, switch to Agent mode, open Tools, click + and choose Add custom MCP server, or add the same servers entry to .mcp.json in your user folder or solution. Then use the Manage Authentication link that appears above the server in the file to sign in.
Connect WhatsApp to a Copilot Studio agent
Copilot Studio lets you build your own agent, and it can use any MCP server that supports sign-in with dynamic client registration, which Perisclaw does.
Open your agent and go to the Tools page.
Select Add a tool, then New tool, then Model Context Protocol.
Fill in Server name (Perisclaw), Server description ("Reads, searches and sends WhatsApp messages on my own number") and Server URL (
https://api.perisclaw.com/mcp/plugin).Under authentication choose OAuth 2.0, set the type to Dynamic discovery, select Create, then Next.
On Add tool, select Create a new connection, sign in to Perisclaw, choose your access level, then select Add to agent.
A WhatsApp number belongs to one person, so build this as your own assistant. With OAuth, each person who uses the agent signs in with their own Perisclaw account; don't share an agent connected to your WhatsApp with your team. If your company restricts Power Platform connectors with data policies, those rules apply to MCP tools too, so your admin may need to allow it.
These steps follow Microsoft's and GitHub's own documentation as of November 2026. If the Perisclaw sign-in doesn't complete, contact support and we'll help.
What about Microsoft 365 Copilot?
Admins can add MCP servers to Microsoft 365 Copilot as custom connectors, but that route asks for a client ID and secret registered ahead of time. Perisclaw only supports automatic registration today, so this doesn't work yet. Developers can build a declarative agent with Microsoft's Agents Toolkit, which does support automatic registration, but that's a developer project rather than a setting.

What to ask once it's connected
Catch up between builds: "What needs my reply on WhatsApp today?"
Pull context into work: "Find the API error the client sent in the WhatsApp group yesterday and open the file it mentions."
Summarise: "Summarise the vendor group since Monday and list decisions I owe."
Reply: "Tell Arjun the fix is deployed." Copilot asks before it uses the sending tool, so check the text and approve it.
Copilot reading your chats doesn't mark them as read. Files work too: up to 10 MB coming in and 25 MB going out.
Is it safe?
Perisclaw connects as a linked device, like WhatsApp Web, so your account stays on your phone and you can log it out under Linked devices. Each Copilot connection gets only your WhatsApp, at the level you chose, and you can remove it from the Perisclaw web app at any time. We don't use your messages to train AI models. WhatsApp's help centre warns that linking unofficial apps can lead to a ban; Perisclaw is built for normal personal use and stops and checks with you after 15 chats if you try to send the same message to many people. FAQ
Can Microsoft Copilot read my WhatsApp messages?
The Copilot app can't; it has no WhatsApp connector and no custom connectors. GitHub Copilot and Copilot Studio agents can, once you connect Perisclaw.
Is Copilot still available on WhatsApp?
No. Microsoft's Copilot chatbot stopped working on WhatsApp on January 15, 2026, after WhatsApp changed its rules for AI chatbots. It was a separate bot, so it never had access to your own chats.
Does this work with GitHub Copilot Free?
Yes. GitHub's MCP policy only applies to Copilot Business and Enterprise organizations, so Free and paid personal plans can add Perisclaw in VS Code.
Can I use WhatsApp in Teams through Copilot?
Not directly today. A Copilot Studio agent you build can use your WhatsApp, but the admin connector for Microsoft 365 Copilot needs a pre-registered client ID, which Perisclaw doesn't offer yet.
