Can Gemini read your WhatsApp? How to connect WhatsApp to Gemini (2026)

You ask Gemini to "summarise what the supplier said on WhatsApp this week" and it offers to send someone a message instead. Gemini runs your Gmail, Calendar and Drive, but the chats where your clients and vendors actually talk to you stay out of reach, so you're back to scrolling and copy-pasting.
Gemini can't read your WhatsApp on its own. Its built-in WhatsApp app on Android can send messages and make calls for you, but Google says it can't read or summarise your chats. To let Gemini read, search and reply to your WhatsApp, connect WhatsApp to Gemini with Perisclaw: add it as a custom app in the Gemini app (US, personal Google accounts) or as an MCP server in Gemini CLI (anywhere), sign in, and choose read only or read and write.
What Gemini can do with WhatsApp on its own
Google's WhatsApp app for Gemini only works in the Gemini app on Android phones and tablets. Ask "message Priya on WhatsApp that I'm running 10 minutes late" and Gemini writes the message, helps you edit it and sends it. As of November 2026, here's where it stops:
Task | Gemini's WhatsApp app (Android) | Gemini + Perisclaw |
|---|---|---|
Send a text message or make a call | Yes | Sends messages (no calls) |
Read or summarise your chats | No | Yes |
Search old messages ("the address Rahul sent") | No | Yes |
Group chats | Send only | Read, summarise and reply |
Photos, voice notes, files | No | Files up to 10 MB in and 25 MB out |
Works on the web or iPhone | No | Web, and the Gemini mobile app once added |
Gemini can also read and reply to WhatsApp notifications through Android's Device assistance app, but that only covers messages as they arrive on your screen, not your history.
To set it up, ask Gemini to message a contact on WhatsApp and follow the prompt to connect. Google needs "Save contact info from your signed-in devices" turned on and the Google app allowed to see your contacts. If quick messages are all you need, this is free, built in and the right choice.
Connect WhatsApp to the Gemini app
Gemini added custom apps, which let it use any service that has an MCP server. As of November 2026 Google limits them to people who are 18 or over and in the US, signed in with a personal Google account (not a work or school one), using Gemini in English with Keep Activity turned on. Google's help page doesn't list a paid plan requirement.
On a computer, open gemini.google.com. You can only add custom apps on the web.
Open Settings, then Connected Apps.
Under Custom apps, click Add a custom app.
Paste
https://api.perisclaw.com/mcp/pluginas the MCP server URL and click Next. You don't need anything under Advanced features; Perisclaw registers Gemini automatically.A Perisclaw sign-in page opens. Sign in, or create an account and link your WhatsApp by scanning a QR code or entering a pairing code on your phone.
Choose Read only or Read & write and approve.

Then start a chat, type @, pick Perisclaw, and ask "What needs my reply on WhatsApp today?" Once it's added on the web, Google makes the custom app available in the Gemini mobile app too.
These steps follow Google's own documentation as of November 2026. If the Perisclaw sign-in doesn't complete, contact support and we'll help.
Gemini asks you to confirm any write action, like sending a message, before it happens. To disconnect, go back to Settings → Connected Apps, open Perisclaw, choose More details and then Remove app.
Connect WhatsApp to Gemini CLI
Gemini CLI, Google's open-source agent for your terminal, works in any country. Run this in your terminal:
gemini mcp add --transport http --scope user perisclaw https://api.perisclaw.com/mcp/plugin
--scope user makes it available in every folder; without it, the server is only added to the current project. Start Gemini CLI and run:
/mcp auth perisclaw
Your browser opens the Perisclaw sign-in. Approve it and choose your access level, and the CLI saves and refreshes the token for you. The sign-in needs a browser on the same computer, so it won't work over plain SSH. If you prefer editing ~/.gemini/settings.json, add a perisclaw entry under mcpServers with "httpUrl": "https://api.perisclaw.com/mcp/plugin".
For more MCP clients and a self-hosted option, see our WhatsApp MCP setup guide.
Outside the US, or on a work account?
If the Gemini app doesn't show Custom apps, you're probably outside the US or signed in with a Workspace account, and Google hasn't opened it to you yet. Your options:
Gemini CLI: works in any country, if you're comfortable in a terminal.
Gemini Enterprise: an admin can add custom MCP servers, but Google's setup asks for a pre-registered client ID and secret, which Perisclaw doesn't issue today, so this route doesn't work with Perisclaw yet.
Another AI app: ChatGPT and Claude connect to Perisclaw in every country. See our guides to connecting WhatsApp to ChatGPT and connecting WhatsApp to Claude.
Perisclaw inside WhatsApp: message your own number (your self-chat) and Perisclaw answers there, with no other AI app involved.
What to ask once it's connected
Catch up: "What needs my reply on WhatsApp today? One line each on why."
Find things: "What price did we agree with the printer last month?"
Summarise a group: "Summarise the site team group since Monday and list anything I need to decide."
Reply: "Tell Priya Friday at 3 works." Gemini shows you the message and waits for you to confirm.
Mix with Google: "Check my calendar and reply to Rahul with two times I'm free on Thursday."
Reading chats this way doesn't mark them as read, so nobody sees blue ticks because Gemini looked.
Is it safe to give Gemini your WhatsApp?
Perisclaw connects to your WhatsApp as a linked device, the same way WhatsApp Web does, so your account stays on your phone and you can log it out under Linked devices at any time. Gemini only gets your own WhatsApp, at the access level you picked, and removing it in Gemini or in the Perisclaw web app cuts access straight away. We don't use your messages to train AI models.
WhatsApp didn't build linked devices for outside tools, and its help centre warns that linking unofficial apps can lead to a ban. Perisclaw is built for normal personal use, and it stops and checks with you after 15 chats if you try to send the same message to many people, because bulk sending is what WhatsApp's spam rules target. Nobody outside WhatsApp can promise zero risk, so we don't. Details are in Privacy & security.
FAQ
Can Gemini read my WhatsApp messages?
Not on its own. Google's help page says Gemini can't read or summarise your messages in WhatsApp; it can only send messages, make calls, and read notifications as they arrive on Android. Connected through Perisclaw, Gemini can read, search and summarise your chats.
Can Gemini reply to my WhatsApp messages automatically?
It can draft and send replies when you ask, and Gemini confirms each one with you first. It doesn't watch your chats and answer on its own. If you want something that keeps an eye on WhatsApp for you, Perisclaw itself sends you briefings and follow-up reminders in your self-chat.
Does the Gemini WhatsApp app work on iPhone?
No. Google lists it for the Gemini app on Android only. A custom app like Perisclaw is different: you add it on the web, and Google says it then shows up in the Gemini mobile app as well.
Do I need Google AI Pro to add a custom app?
Google's help page doesn't list a plan requirement, only the US, age, account, language and Keep Activity conditions above. Availability may widen, so check Settings → Connected Apps for the Custom apps section.
What does Perisclaw cost?
There's a 7-day free trial with no card needed, then a flat monthly price. The same account works in Gemini, ChatGPT, Claude and inside WhatsApp.
